Essential Supplies for Building a Traditional Muzzleloader Kit
Building a traditional style muzzleloader has a number of different appeals. Wether you are looking for a piece to hang on your wall or for something to take out in the field to hunt with, a muzzleloader kit is a great idea.
In this article, we are going to cover the basic but essential tools needed to complete the kit building process. We will cover items like the barrel finishing kit and Stock finishing kit from Birchwood Casey and the Grace USA Gun Care Tool Set which you can read more about in this article and can shop for on our website.
Now let's take a look at the essential items needed to construct your own traditional muzzleloader kit.
Wood Files (various shapes and sizes)
Throughout the kit building process, you will need to remove wood from the stock to ensure proper fitment for various parts. You will want to make sure that you have a number of different wood files available so you can make modifications as needed.
Wood Chisels
Chisels have a single razor sharp edge for slicing and caving; you will need this tool for inletting the stock so that metal pieces like the lock, barrel, and trigger guard all fit flush with the stock. This tool will be a necessity to complete the kit building process.
Vise
While this isn’t a necessity, a vise is still a handy piece of equipment to have for holding items while you are working on them. For example, it can be used for holding the stock while you are sanding it or for bending barrel wedge pins if the barrel is loose fitting on the stock.
Cordless drill
In order to build the kit properly you will need to drill small pilot holes into the wood stock. This will help to avoid cracking the stock. You may also need the drill to help enlarge holes so that the wood screws can properly align.
Sandpaper (150, 180, 220 Grit)
You will need sand paper to bring wood and metal surfaces flush with each other. You will want to make sure to take the wood off carefully, deliberately, and slowly since you can’t add wood back to the stock.
You will also need sand paper to achieve the best stock finish. 220 grit sandpaper is recommended to achieve the ideal stock finish.
Steel Wool
You will use steel wool to buff the metal and brass components to achieve a professional, accurate finish and to smooth out any imperfections to give the hardware its polished and finished form.
Barrel Finishing Kit
You will want to brown or blue steel parts to prevent rust, provide a durable wear resistant finish, and achieve a historically accurate appearance. We recommend the bluing or browning kit available from Birchwood Casey.
Wood putty
Essential for correcting minor inletting errors and shoring up loose fittings. It fills gaps, cracks, and imperfections, ensuring a tight, desirable finish.
Stock Finishing Kit
You will want to protect the raw wood from moisture and give your muzzleloader its traditional finish so you will need a stock finishing kit. We recommend the Birchwood Casey Stock Finish Kit.
Grace USA Gun Care Tool Set
This set comes with a number of tools that are essential for your kit build. This kit includes 8 different screw drivers and brass punches, and a 8 oz hammer. All of these tools will be necessary to complete the kit build whether you are inserting screws, or tapping in barrel or tenon pins.
Safety Googles
You will need safety goggles to protect your eyes from wood debris from sanding, filing, and carving wood and also from any metal shaving that comes from fitting the hardware together.
Latex Gloves
You will also want to wear latex or nitrile gloves to protect your skin from the metal and wood finishing chemicals.
