Best Muzzleloader Open Sights for 2025

Black powder muzzleloading bridges the gap between archery and centerfire shooting, providing unique challenges to the sport. While modern muzzleloaders are now capable of shooting out beyond 300 yards with the assistance of modern optics, the majority of muzzleloader hunters are taking shots within 100 yards with open sights. Whether you are wanting the additional challenge of using open sights or simply following state regulations, it is important to choose the correct open sight setup for your muzzleloader. Our passion is to simplify muzzleloading and make the sport more easily accessible. We at Muzzle-Loaders.com have put together a list of our most popular open sights to use in all 50 states as well as some vital information in regards to state regulations.

Best Open Sight of 2025!

Muzzle-Loaders.com has chosen the Williams Western Precision sight set as the best open sight of 2025! This was an easy choice considering the form and function of the set as well as the availability, usability, and versatility for most, if not all, hunting and shooting applications.

Prior to 2020 there was not a reliable set of components to make a high end peep sight and globe sight setup. While there were individual components from different manufacturers, hunters were often resorting to making a Frankenstein’s monster of different pieces that didn’t function well together since they weren’t designed as a complete unit. Williams found a solution to this problem and introduced the Williams Western Precision Sight set (WPS). The WPS system integrates a rear peep sight with a dedicated globe front sight with interchangeable inserts for optimal performance. Since the set was designed to work together, adjustments could be made with ease and the peep base would be the correct height to pair with the globe sight.

The standard WPS introduced a reticle card with 6 different swappable inserts depending on your preference. The fine crosshair insert has been our favourite as it optimizes accuracy at medium or longer ranges. The fine crosshair doesn’t cover up the target like a post sight and allows you to stretch out your optimal range while still taking an ethical shot. The WPS system is available for most modern muzzleloader setups for CVA, Traditions, T/C, Remington 700, and some Knight models. The updated design also features open sections of the globe sight to let in more residual light and Williams has also introduced fiber optic inserts as well in green and orange. Every WPS set is made of solid aluminum, making it lightweight and easy to install. Each complete WPS with crosshairs set includes a globe sight, peep sight, and reticle card. Keep in mind that the fiber optic WPS sets will not include a reticle card and it must be purchased separately.

You can also purchase the peep sights, globe sights, and globe fiber optic inserts separately in the event that you don't need a brand new set.

Whether you are looking for a sight set for a Thompson Center Triumph Bone Collector, a Traditions Vortek StrikerFire, or a CVA Optima V2 pistol, there is an open sight set specifically made for your setup. Each sight set is made of durable and lightweight aluminum and is extremely easy to install. Simply find the correct sight set for your specific make and model. Keep an eye out as your open sight muzzleloaders may have Williams Fiber Optic Sights already installed, but if they aren’t included, they are easy to find and we will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Best Versatile Open Sight Add-On

The Williams Ace-In-The-Hole picatinny rail and the EABCO PeepRib are the Muzzle-Loaders.com pick for most versatile open sight add-on for 2025!

We have a lot of customers who are wanting to hunt in multiple states with different regulations. There is often a need to have open sights mounted while allowing a scope to mount as well. Two great options for this scenario are the Williams Ace-In-The-Hole picatinny rail and the EABCO PeepRib. The Ace-In-The-Hole or PeepRib will mount in the scope mount screw holes of your muzzleloader and they feature a dedicated peep sight on the rail closest to the receiver of the muzzleloader. The Williams rail is a picatinny-style rail, while the EABCO PeepRib is a standard weaver design. Both of these options are compatible with all standard scope rings as long as the rings are designed to fit a standard scope rail. A quick detach scope ring setup is a great option when you need to remove the scope and use the open sights, however, a see-through scope ring setup is great for using both sight systems at the same time as you can simply peer underneath the scope to use the open sights. Both of these rails are available for all standard break action models for CVA, Traditions, and T/C.

Best Overall Peep Sight Add-On

The Williams WGRS peep and Williams Ghost Ring peep are the Muzzle-Loaders.com pick for the best open sight add-on of 2025!

While most break action muzzleloaders come equipped with a standard fiber optic buckhorn set, some shooters prefer the use of a peep sight. A peep sight allows you to channel more focus on the front sight, giving you more control and accuracy over each shot. Peep sights may not come in a complete set as they are intended to work with the included front sight with the muzzleloader. Whether your eyesight isn’t as strong as it once was, you have a sight disability, or simply prefer the focus that a peep sight provides, the Williams WGRS and Williams Ghost Ring is our choice for a Best Peep Sight Add-On.

The Williams Ghost Ring is unique in that it features two fiber optic dots on the left and right of the peep aperture. The intention is to allow the shooter to focus your front sight between the two fiber optic sights to line up your target more efficiently. This also works well while hunting in lower light such as the early morning or evening or in dense trees and brush where the target may be obscured. Keep in mind that if you are using the Williams Ghost Ring on a compatible CVA break action muzzleloader, that you may need the accompanying ramp to use properly.

Best Quality Peep Sight

The Williams FP (Foolproof) peep sight system is the Muzzle-Loaders.com pick for best quality peep sight of 2025!

There is a lot of opportunity to upgrade from a standard peep sight to an FP peep sight with additional ways to adjust for elevation and windage. FP sights can be a personal preference but also give you a bit more adjustment while on the field or on the range, and are also used for open sight competition shooting. As of 2025, Williams has unveiled their new FP sight sets to be available for break action CVA Accura and Paramount muzzleloaders for the very first time! The Williams FP sights are also available for T/C Encore & Omega, T/C Hawken & Renegade, and most Knight rifles.

The key features of the Williams CVA FP sight include a micro-adjustment windage and elevation notches, ergonomic target knobs for easy adjustment, and a dedicated WPS front globe sight with changeable reticles. Not all FP sights will have a globe sight included, but all of the FP sights are compatible to be used with the new WPS globe sight system.

**** Note concerning Open Sight State Regulations ****

All 50 US states allow for the use of open sights during muzzleloader season, however, a few states require the use of open sights ONLY for hunting. Colorado, Oregon, Idaho, Washington*, New Mexico,  Nevada, and California* all require open sights during muzzleloader hunting seasons. While Montana does not have any specific open sight requirements, the Heritage Season requires the use of a traditional sidelock muzzleloader, which will generally be used in conjunction with open sights.
