Description

The rifle carried across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains by western pioneers and trappers was the pinnacle of the modern percussion firearms development of the mid-nineteenth century. Originally designed and built by such famous makers as Hawken, Gemmer and Demick, the Gemmer Hawken Rifle represents durable design in a big bore caliber with plenty of knockdown power. No other factory assembled rifle offers the authentic style and design of Investarm's Gemmer Hawken Rifle.

The Hawken rifle was originally produced by brothers Jacob and Samuel Hawken, in their St. Louis, Missouri shop founded in 1815. The earliest known record of a Hawken rifle dates back to 1823 when one was custom made for William Henry Ashley, a gun powder manufacturer turned fur trader, who used it in his expeditions up the Missouri river to the interior of the Western United States. Ashley and his men are credited with the creation of the rendezvous system, in which Native Americans and trappers would meet to trade goods, money and furs.

The Hawken brothers custom made each one of their rifles by hand. This attention to detail gained Hawken rifles a reputation for both durability and long-range accuracy. A number of famous men are said to have owned Hawken rifles, including Auguste Lacome, Hugh Glass, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Joseph Meek, Jedediah Strong Smith and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1864 the Hawken Shop was purchased by J.P. Gemmer, a longtime employee, who held true to tradition and maintained the "Hawken" quality until the shop closed in 1915. Our reproduction maintains the integrity of many of the original features of the Hawken rifle, while integrating modern technology for today’s shooter. Historically, these guns were .50 or .54 caliber with octagonal barrels of 33 to 36 inches. The hardwood stocks had a curved cheek piece, double-set triggers and front blade sights with furniture and butt plates fashioned from iron. Our reproduction integrates these classic features with a lighter 32-inch barrel, blackened hardware and modern precision manufacturing of all component parts.

This Classic Plains Hawken Kit offers legendary high-quality features such as a 32" barrel with 1 in 60" twist rate for patched ball hunting loads, double set triggers and Hawken style percussion "snail" with clean-out screw. The rifle includes a separate ramrod entry thimble and nose cap, and reliable coil spring lock with correct lock plate. The Investarm™ Gemmer Hawken Rifle is available in .45 to .54 caliber and flintlock or percussion configurations. The Investarm™ Gemmer Hawken Rifle Kit is an attractive, traditional muzzleloader that is rugged, well built and meant to last a lifetime. This muzzleloader is the same model as the Great Plains Rifle

These guys rock!

I called in for a part last week. Great guys to deal with, fast response. They sent me a replacement. It was in the mailbox on Sat. It was perfect, no fingerprints anywhere, it works well. I also had an original rear sight. It fit right on my kit Gemmer. A couple strokes of a diamond file, and it went right on. I had measured the blade height and it was a 1/16" lower. Couple strokes on the front sight and I am sure it will work
Again, Thank you Muzzleloader.com! When I need something, you are the first I look to. I have yet to be even slightly disappointed.

True love

Was very impressed with the amount of (or lack there of) fitting required upon assembly. The biggest chore of the whole project was sanding the stock down to an adequate finish. I did a liquid brown finish on the steel components, and singed all the wood with a propane torch prior to final sanding (800gr). And absolutely love the way it turned out. As for performance, the double set trigger, while stiff to set, functions flawlessly with less than a 6oz pull. Extremely accurate at 100yds and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot twice that far with favorable conditions. My navy pistols take a 40gr charge which the custom spout of my powderhorn is calibrated to. In the name of efficiency and after observing performance over a chronograph I decided to go with a 120gr charge under a patched round ball (.50cal). While I cannot recommend exceeding the manuals max load data, I can say with confidence that the rifle is more than capable of handling the load. Pushing a consistent speed of 1895fps compared to around a 1200fps with an 80 charge. Have taken 2 mature axis bucks 1 whitetail buck and numerous hogs of all sizes and have yet to be disappointed with terminal performance. With the longest recovery being the first axis due to low shot placement (my fault not the guns), everything else has been recovered within 50yds of poi. Like I said. Absolutely love this rifle and belive my next project will be the same model in flintlock!

Extremely happy with the item. !!!

From the moment I put in my order, to its receipt, I am pleased. I am a master jeweler now retired, and I really like the fitment of all the parts. I have done several build ups and this kit is the best. I mean best. From the '70's till now, I have made my share of the rifles out there.
This rifle is a pleasure to work on. I am now awaiting Plum Brown. I like the browned look.
The barrel was a drop in, the lock and breach assembly fit perfectly. I might bed it, it depends on the stock at final assembly.
Now, the ordering service.
Excellent. The order took three back and fourths. The personnel that attended to my order were professional, extremely attentive, and just plain had me relaxing on the order. The only thing missing is the ramrod spring, and two wedges.
A fine rifle, great service, and an overall good experience. Would I get another rifle from these fine folks. I sure would.
I thank you, Muzzle-Loaders.com. Maybe next time I will get a double rifle in .50.
You guys rock!

Extremely happy with the item.

Guys,I submitted a review, a couple of weeks ago.
I just want to state here, that, You guys Rock! The competent sales folks who helped me, I ever thought I had given the wrong address. You looked up the sales and gave me the one I gave, which was actually correct. We just moved into our house and I was a tad frosty.
I love the packaging, the parts inside of it,
Beautiful! Sharp crisp on the barrel. It all just worked out! I have a copy of a set of original plans, with dimensions! I am so looking forward to making the rifle!
I just got some new tests taken. I broke my neck, and my back. Everything tingles, however this "kit" takes from detailing what I would have trouble with. I am awaiting my bench. I take an old desk from a recycle shop, or thrift store, add two 4 X 4s to one end, attach my Wood crafters vice, and I got it made. I do not look back with regret as the folks at Muzzle Loaders .com really made this desire into something I can hold and see.
Again, thanks to the two sales folks, and thanks to investarms for making a good "kit"
