Description

The rifle carried across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains by western pioneers and trappers was the pinnacle of the modern percussion firearms development of the mid-nineteenth century. Originally designed and built by such famous makers as Hawken, Gemmer and Demick, the Gemmer Hawken Rifle represents durable design in a big bore caliber with plenty of knockdown power. No other factory assembled rifle offers the authentic style and design of Investarm's Gemmer Hawken Rifle.

The Hawken rifle was originally produced by brothers Jacob and Samuel Hawken, in their St. Louis, Missouri shop founded in 1815. The earliest known record of a Hawken rifle dates back to 1823 when one was custom made for William Henry Ashley, a gun powder manufacturer turned fur trader, who used it in his expeditions up the Missouri river to the interior of the Western United States. Ashley and his men are credited with the creation of the rendezvous system, in which Native Americans and trappers would meet to trade goods, money and furs.

The Hawken brothers custom made each one of their rifles by hand. This attention to detail gained Hawken rifles a reputation for both durability and long-range accuracy. A number of famous men are said to have owned Hawken rifles, including Auguste Lacome, Hugh Glass, Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Joseph Meek, Jedediah Strong Smith and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1864 the Hawken Shop was purchased by J.P. Gemmer, a longtime employee, who held true to tradition and maintained the "Hawken" quality until the shop closed in 1915. Our reproduction maintains the integrity of many of the original features of the Hawken rifle, while integrating modern technology for today’s shooter. Historically, these guns were .50 or .54 caliber with octagonal barrels of 33 to 36 inches. The hardwood stocks had a curved cheek piece, double-set triggers and front blade sights with furniture and butt plates fashioned from iron. Our reproduction integrates these classic features with a lighter 32-inch barrel, blackened hardware and modern precision manufacturing of all component parts.

This Classic Plains Hawken Kit offers legendary high-quality features such as a 32" barrel with 1 in 60" twist rate for patched ball hunting loads, double set triggers and Hawken style percussion "snail" with clean-out screw. The rifle includes a separate ramrod entry thimble and nose cap, and reliable coil spring lock with correct lock plate. The Investarm™ Gemmer Hawken Rifle is available in .45 to .54 caliber and flintlock or percussion configurations. The Investarm™ Gemmer Hawken Rifle Kit is an attractive, traditional muzzleloader that is rugged, well built and meant to last a lifetime.

*This muzzleloader is the same model as the Great Plains Rifle

Gemmer Hawkens kit

My first go at a black powder rifle kit. Out of the box I was impressed with the wood and barrel. Barrel did have a lot of stuff in it but cleaned up nicely. Parts fit well but a lot of woodwork is needed, just go slow.
Nearly done with the wood, (fitting) parts. Then I will finish the stock. It would be nice to know the kind of wood rather than the generic European hardwood description. However, many pictures are available to help decide color, looks to be a type of walnut, perhaps. A lot of work but very enjoyable. Just don't work beyond your patience level, and your will have a lot of fun. Looking forward to the stock finishing and then the blueing. Have a little experience with both, but no expert. I was pleased and that's what counts most.

Couldn't be happier with the contents, and the sharp lines on the barrel.

I have written on this review, and it keeps not showing.
Again, I absolutely love this kit. Better than any kits I have done before. It is amazing how tight the parts fit. The stock is prime! Very little to do to finish this. The walnut is well figured, it finishes smooth and feels well designed. The furnished cone, is hard and clean threads. It is an amazing, practical, and most of all, it handles well. The under rib fits well to the barrel. I am replacing the clean out screw with an allen dome head machine screw. If I forget to keep an eye on the corrosion, the Allen head makes it easy to remove. The trigger, and trigger guard fits very comfortbly. The sight with a little filling on the keyway, if fits very snugly. Same with the rear sights. The Gemmer comes with a non adjustable rear sight, and a rear sight that is adjustable. Take your pick, each has its adjustment, and the sight picture is excellent.
This rifle is a joy to own. A joy to make. Iove it. Plain and simple.

Inletting for trigger guard, rear butt cap and ajoining sole plate not on same centerline.

Finish on the barrel and barrel tang excellent. Inletting is nice and tight to the hardware. Wood quality nice with good grain pattern. However, Inletting for trigger guard, rear butt cap and toe plate not on the same centerline. Stock blank was likely warped at time of milling. This may also be the cause of a pecan sized gouge 1/16 inch deep just forward of the cheek side lock boss. The fit up of the butt cap and sole plate appear to have been "hand fudged" to accommodate the misalignment issues. Even though this is an intentionally rough stock, stock is disappointing and not up to the standard of the hardware. Tried to call service and chat line numerous times 5/9/2020....no response. Kit was received 4/31/2022.

Okay ish

Wood was rough with a lot to remove which wasn't a big deal. Biggest problem was the under rib screws were missing and inept one hole on the barrel was tapped for them.
