Description

The Traditions™ Blunderbuss Kit comes in .54 caliber flintlock ignition. The Blunderbuss features a flared steel barrel and features a single-stage trigger for easy ignition. The rifle’s hardwood stock is accented by beautiful brass trigger-guard and butt plate furniture. The 16 3/4" trumpet-style barrel is designed to shoot .54 caliber round balls. Once finished the Traditions Blunderbuss Rifle is great to enjoy out to the range or simply display on your wall.

The Blunderbuss was considered a poor man's shotgun. The blunderbuss could be loaded with various scraps, rocks, or wood, although this would result in damage to the barrel of the gun. Most historical accounts have the blunderbuss being loaded with lead balls smaller than the bore diameter. The early Blunderbuss barrels were constructed from either steel or brass, and was usually flared. The barrel flaring served a two-fold purpose by increasing the spread of the shot, and serving as a funnel, making it easier to reload on horseback or on top of a moving carriage. The flared muzzle is the defining feature of the Blunderbuss, differentiating it from other large caliber carbines of it's day. Blunderbusses were notoriously short, with barrels under two feet in length, at a time when a typical musket barrel was over three feet long.

One of the best ways to get a real hands-on muzzleloading experience is to build a rifle yourself. Easy to read instructions guide you through the building process to a finished product. There is no greater feeling of accomplishment than knowing you built a fully functional rifle for shooting or display.

Awesome, easy to build kit

Mine was built in only a few days, needed some tapping to choose a gap between the lock and the barrel, otherwise there's a small gap that can lead to prefer getting trapped where it shouldn't.
Had it for some time now, but looking for a new hammer for it.

Does this take the same hammer as any of the other kits out there? Any assistance would be great!

Not a difficult project.

I've built several black powder kits, pistol and rifle, and this flintlock blunderbuss is by far the easiest that I've done. The parts fit together very well, and the trigger guard was nearly finished and buffed out, straight out of the box.. Careful rasp-work and sanding on the stock are required, as well as a buffing and blueing of the barrel. I used Birchwood-Casey Super Blue on the barrel, and Arm-R-Seal gloss on the stock, along with golden pecan stain.

Great Flintlock

I really enjoyed building this kit. The Blunderbuss is easily one of my favorite guns to shoot. The kit was incredibly easy to put together. I was able to pick it up while it was on sale so I got a great deal. I have found it to be a quality firearm.

A great first build

This was our first build. I was responsible for fitting and bluing and my wife was in charge of the stain and oil. It was very easy to fit all the parts. Some chiseling and sanding of the stock was necessary for fitting. But that made it worth the effort. The barrel was an easy fit. We used the recommended Birchwood Casey bluing and stain and oil. That stuff was easy to put on. The gun kit came with schematic to follow and it was very accurate. We put it all together and put a flint on the cock. It sparked and we shot a .53 patched round ball using 40 gr of black powder. Great fun and kit.

Ramrod length?

How long of a ramrod should I order for my blunderbuss?

Hi Andrew, we recommend using around a 20 inch ramrod for the Blunderbuss.
