How Accurate are Round Balls in a Modern Inline Muzzleloader?!

We've recently had a lot of questions in regards to being able to use round balls in a modern inline muzzleloader. Round balls are significantly less expensive compared to conical projectiles and we wanted to put it to the test. Watch the video below to see our results!

We started the test by sighting in the scope to ensure that the muzzleloader is accurate enough to test the round balls. After shooting a quick three shot group with the PowerBelt ELR AC1900AT bullets, we had a tight group around the bullseye and called it good. The Optima sports a 1:28" twist rate that is designed to shoot modern projectiles and round balls stabilize in a slower 1:60" to 1:66" twist (or even a hybrid twist of 1:48"). 

After shooting three round balls, we still did not have any discernible group. We had a couple of shots that were high left, but the quicker twist rate was not stabilizing them as well as the conical bullets. In conclusion, we realized that substituting a round ball straight across for a conical bullet in a quick twist scenario. Even at 50 yards, the accuracy isn't safe for using in a hunting scenario and we would not recommend using a round ball in a quicker twist rate muzzleloader. That being said, we understand that there may be other ways to achieve better accuracy with a round ball in a 1:28 twist, but that will have to wait for another range day.

It is important to notice that it is perfectly safe for a modern inline to use a patched round ball. If you want to shoot your muzzleloader at a cheaper cost, then using round balls is a great option!
