Description

The Pedersoli™ Howdah Hunter Percussion Shotgun Pistol was popular with European explorers in the expansive jungles of India and Burma in the mid-1800s. The shotgun pistol is named for the "howdah" or basket that was set atop an elephant on such explorations. On a typical excursion, explorers and soldiers were part of an elephant caravan. Wild tigers could scale the side of a slow-moving elephant in the blink of an eye. To combat surprise attacks, the Howdah-style side-by-side pistol was invented.

The Pedersoli™ Howdah Shotgun Pistol features twin 20-ga. smoothbore barrels that can be loaded with buckshot, a single slug, or the devastating "buck and ball"-load common in big-bore muzzleloaders used on dangerous game of the time.

The Howdah Shotgun Pistol sports an ergonomic checkered walnut grip and recoil-combating end-cap counterweight. The pistol's case-hardened lockplates are engraved with wild animal scenes and are a beautiful counterpoint to the 11.25" blued barrels.

Beautiful piece, but misfires constantly.

This is an amazing looking firearm, but the hammers aren't lined up with the nipples properly and it's nearly impossible to get to fire even with magnum primers. I had a little luck by pulling out the nipples and priming with some FFF, but still only shoots about half the time if I'm lucky. Otherwise, it just won't fire at all. I would've looked into a replacement, but these are just about impossible to find, so I guess I'll be for display. I looked online and heard some complaints about the Patent Breech being fussy, but nothing like the misfires I'm seeing. I tried some hotshot nipples and the problem was even worse. I also have the Pedersoli 10 gauge and it's much more reliable and has the same breech;, nipples, and the mechanism appears identical, so the misalignment of the hammers seems to be the only explanation I can think of. I'm not sure how common this is and things like this can happen with even the best brands, but just be aware before buying as I suspect a replacement would be impossible. If it would fire, it would be an easy 5/5.
